I've Been Tagged

I got tagged by the Cooking Ninja (that stealthy gal) to list 7 random things about myself that you probably don't know. So here goes.

1- I've jumped out of an airplane. On purpose. My sister and I took a day jump class and went parachuting. I wanted to be able to say I'd done something bold and adventurous in my life. It was combination exhilarating and terrifying. I'm so glad I went but have no need to ever go again.

2 -I had 3 of my 4 babies at home with a midwife and no drugs. The first one was in a birthing center with a midwife, also no drugs. I love being in my own space with my own comfort measures to have my babies. It sure beats going to the hospital and having nurses and doctors boss you around and possibly getting cut into. The current US c-section rate is 1 in 3. Yikes!

3- I can make my ears wiggle, without using my hands. Don't feel badly if you can't do it; it's a genetic trait.

4- I am the world's fussiest shopper for shoes. I can't stand shoes that pinch, slip, slide, or bind. My mother would go nuts trying to get me to buy school shoes; it took forever.

5- I loathe running. It makes my lungs and knees hurt and my bum and boobs flop.

6- I speak in movie quotes. Some TV shows, too. Currently, a lot of Arrested Development and The Office. It saves the time and energy of having to think up my own witty lines, but baffles and mystifies people who haven't seen the movie.

7- I lived a year in Germany when I was 8. I attended a German school and learned German by the sink or swim method. There I learned about the joys of zimmels, and Nutella. My best friend was a fun, feisty German girl named Manuela Schindler. Anyone know her?

There. Wasn't that enlightening?

Now it's my turn to tag. Participation is entirely voluntary! If you'd like to do it, just post seven random things about yourself that others might not know.

OK. I did it. You are brave to jump out of the plane. I love terra firma and would not jump out of the plane, even if dared!

Whoa! I agree with Melinda, you are so brave for parachuting! And I can't wiggle my ears. :(

I shouldn't but here goes:

1. I majored in German at the University of Washington because I did poorly at science and well in languages.

2. I flew hang gliders in their early days (mid-1970s) until a crash in upper Michigan ended my flying days.

3. I grew up with no relatives, then discovered my large, warm and welcoming Mexican-American relatives in Texas and California in the 1970s.

4. My wife and I lost our only daughter to suicide in 1989. Words cannot describe...

5. I LOVE the Barbie movies and own them all. I know, it's odd for a man, but they're so magical. I bought my wife all the existing Jane Austen movies but they don't appeal to me much.

6. Hawaii appeals to me much. My wife and I visited the Big Island and Maui this year and we spent some time at our condo in Kauai. I don't know why it pulls us so much.

7. I can't cook but I like Lynn's blog because of how eloquently she writes. Lynn, you should start writing professionally.

And now, back to my homework (I'm taking a UCI class and should be working, not posting).

Wow - 3 babies without drugs! I haven't had kids yet but that sounds quite an amazing feat!

I can't believe you jumped out of a plane! Madness! As someone who's slowly working to overcome her fear of heights, the thought of doing something like that covers my skin in goosebumps! I'm glad that you enjoyed the thrill of the experience :)

I'm also totally impressed that you had children at home with no drugs! I've heard that the injection hurts quite a fair bit, but the wuss that I am, I think I'd rather endure that pain than the ongoing hours...but then again, there *is* that connection that you're meant to feel during the birth. May I ask what you thought of home birth as opposed to hospital?

I admire your courage in giving birth at home and with no drugs. i couldn't do that :) I delivered both my kids thru C-section.

I enjoyed reading your post and it's good to know you more :)

Melinda - I think that's a wise attitude!

Amy - Brave... or loony.

Joe - I love a man who can admit he loves Barbie movies! Thanks for sharing.

Wok and Spoon - Actually 4. I remember each and every birth. And they all hurt. But I survived and they're great.

Ellie - Believe it or not, I have quit a fear of heights. Parachuting is totally different as there's no perspective- not at all like looking over the edge of a building.

I love home birth! I could go on at length about the benefits of home birth and midwives, but as this is a food blog, you'll need to email me if you want the full rant.

Anne - Thanks! I hope you'll continue to drop by, even though you no know all this random weirdness about me. :-)

OK - you are amazing. Seriously...4 kids at home and no drugs? You are a super woman! There is no way I could do the no drugs, although with baby #3 I was very close...but had the drugs in time to push.

Thanks for the tag! I actually did this a week or so ago...here is the link to it:

Kristen - Super woman? Where's my cape? No, seriously, I fear the hospitals more than I fear the birth.

I must have put my brain in storage, because I had read that post. Sorry for the dougle-tag!

4 babies with no drugs, wow!

I didn't have anything in the 30 hours pre-ceeding my c section and it was awful!!
